Who this is for

This is for you if

You own a Fujifilm camera and want to understand recipes, not just collect them.
You've tried copying a recipe from Instagram or YouTube and it looked nothing like theirs.
You want to build your own signature look instead of relying on someone else's settings.
You don't know what WB Shift, Dynamic Range or Grain Effect are doing to your photos.
You shoot for fun, for content, or professionally, whether you're just starting out or further along.

Instant access

Sound familiar?

Still didn't look right.

You copied every number exactly. Same camera, same lens. You checked the screen after the first shot, then again after the second. Neither one looked like the photo you copied the recipe from.

Recipes are easy to find. Understanding them is what changes your photos. Film simulation, dynamic range, highlight balance, colour chrome, grain: the numbers are simple to copy, but that's not the same as understanding what those controls are doing to your images.

That's why a recipe can look incredible in one example and behave completely differently once you try it yourself. Once you understand the mechanism, recipes stop feeling random. You can choose them with confidence, adjust the ones you already like, and start building your own.

What you'll get

01
Film simulations: the base layer
Your film simulation is the foundation everything else sits on. You'll learn what each one is built to do, so you're picking a base that suits the shot, not just one whose name sounds nice.
02
Mood controls: white balance, colour chrome and grain
White balance for mood over accuracy. What colour chrome does to your saturated tones. How grain works as texture, not decoration.
03
Protection controls: dynamic range and highlight/shadow balance
Why the same DR setting behaves completely differently in flat light versus harsh sun, and how to protect your highlights and shadows on purpose.
04
Texture and restraint: sharpness, clarity and noise reduction
The settings most people crank up without thinking, and why restraint usually gets you closer to the look you're after.
05
Using recipes in the real world
Why recipes don't always work. What to do when one doesn't match the conditions in front of you. How to program it into your camera correctly.
06
Example recipes to shoot with
Ready-made recipes to follow along, program straight into your camera and take out shooting, then adjust if you need to once you see the results.
07
Creating your own recipes
Most importantly, you'll learn how to create your own recipes based on the environments you want to shoot in.

This isn't a recipe pack. You won't get a list of numbers to punch in and hope for the best.
You'll understand what you're doing, so any recipe you try after this, mine or someone else's, makes sense on your camera too.

The outcome

What you walk away with

You pick recipes based on the light you actually want to shoot in, not whatever looked good on someone's feed.
You get consistent results straight out of camera, so the shot on the back of your screen matches what you imagined.
Your edit time drops because the look is already set in the camera, not fixed afterwards in Lightroom.
You can build your own recipe from scratch instead of relying on someone else's settings forever.
What's possible

Every photo looks like the one in your head.

Imagine picking up your camera already knowing the shot will come out looking exactly how you pictured it.

You know which recipe to reach for, and you're not left wondering why your version looks nothing like the one you saw online.

Once you understand what each setting is doing, and why it behaves differently depending on your light and subject, recipes stop being a gamble. You choose them on purpose, you tweak them when something's not quite right, and you eventually build ones that are entirely your own.

This isn't a recipe pack, and it's not about memorising numbers. It's about understanding recipes properly, so every photo you take looks like the one in your head.

Every recipe you'll ever find online becomes ten times more useful once you understand this. Not because you'll get better recipes. It's that you'll finally know what to do with the ones you already have.

Why I built this course

Matt Jackson
MATT JACKSON
Photographer & Educator

I'm a photographer and educator based in Hamburg, and I run Focus Mode, a photography education brand built for people who want to understand their camera, not just poke at settings and hope.

I didn't understand what these recipe settings were doing either. I'd copy one and get something completely different, with no idea why. So I went in properly, pulling each setting apart on its own and testing it across different light until I understood what it was doing to the image.

It took me a long time to figure out how to put a recipe together properly, instead of just copying someone else's numbers and hoping for the best.

Everything I worked out is in this course, all in one place, so you don't have to spend as long figuring it out as I did.

Ready?

Your camera already knows how to do this. Now you will too.

Questions

Before you go

This is for Fujifilm shooters who already use recipes but can't figure out why the results are hit and miss. If you want to understand why each setting does what it does instead of just copying numbers, this is for you.
Yes, as long as you already know how to take photos. This is not a foundations course, so I won't be teaching aperture, shutter speed or ISO. It's about how Fujifilm's JPEG controls shape the final look.
No, this isn't a recipe pack. You'll learn how recipes work so you can use any recipe with more confidence, including ones you build yourself.
It's on-demand. Go at your own pace and come back to the lessons whenever you're tweaking a recipe later.
